Fethiye Without a Car: A Holiday Based in the Town Centre

Updated:

Can you get around Fethiye without a car? In short: largely yes, especially if you stay in the town centre. Public transport in the district runs on buses and dolmuş minibuses, and the route list of MUTTAŞ, the public transport company of Muğla Metropolitan Municipality, includes lines from Fethiye to Ölüdeniz, Çalış, Kayaköy, Göcek and many other places. Still, for some places you need to plan around departure times, and on some days a tour or a taxi is worth considering. This guide explains how to holiday without a hire car and why staying in the centre helps.

Why staying in the centre makes it easier

When you look at the route list, you will see that most routes start with "Fethiye – ...". In other words, many lines are connected to the town centre. If you stay in the centre, it is easier to head in a different direction each day, come back to the same place in the evening and do your shopping along the way.

The centre also has sights of its own: the Amyntas rock tombs, the ancient theatre of Telmessos, Fethiye castle, Fethiye Museum, the Paspatur old bazaar and the fish market. We describe them one by one in our guide to staying in Fethiye town centre.

Where you can go by dolmuş

The lines below appear on the route list published by MUTTAŞ. Line numbers and routes can change, so check the current list before you travel.

  • Ölüdeniz: the Fethiye – Ölüdeniz line runs via Ovacık and Hisarönü. A separate Ölüdeniz – Babadağ line is also listed.
  • Çalış: there are two lines, one along the coast road and one via Günlükbaşı.
  • Kayaköy: two routes, one via Karakeçililer and one via Ovacık and Hisarönü. Kayaköy is a former Greek village that was abandoned after the 1923 population exchange.
  • Faralya and Kabak: the Fethiye – Faralya – Kabak line.
  • Göcek: the Fethiye – Göcek line.
  • Saklıkent: the line to the gorge in Saklıkent National Park is listed among the Seydikemer lines as Saklıkent – Kayadibi – Fethiye.
  • Şövalye Island: a Fethiye – Şövalye Island line is also on the list.
  • Dalaman Airport: there is a line between Fethiye bus station and the airport.

You will find more on beaches in our guide to beaches from Fethiye by dolmuş, and route ideas in day trips from Fethiye. For getting into town from the airport, see Dalaman Airport to Fethiye centre.

By sea: the Çalış water dolmuş

Water dolmuş boats have been running between the Fethiye waterfront and Çalış for many years. It is a different experience from the road, with views of the bay from the water. Summer and winter timetables can differ, so check departure times and fares at the pier or with local sources.

Tips for a car-free holiday

  • Check times in advance: frequency varies by season and by line. On longer routes such as Saklıkent or Kabak, find out the time of the last return service before you go.
  • Check current fares: fares and payment methods can change; ask at the stop or check the MUTTAŞ line pages.
  • Plan for the heat: in summer, starting early cuts down on waiting in the midday sun.
  • Places without a line: for example, we could not find a direct line to Tlos on the lists. For such places, consider a tour or a taxi.
  • Boat trips: boat trips are not linked to the dolmuş network; we explain how to join one in our 12 Islands boat trip guide.

When does hiring a car make sense?

If you want to spend most of your holiday in coves without a dolmuş line, or see many distant places on the same day, a car can be practical. But you do not need one for the whole stay. Staying in the centre, using the dolmuş and your feet on most days and hiring a car for just a day or two is also an option. That way you do not have to look for parking in town.

A car-free holiday in an apartment

Without a car, easy shopping matters more. Yes Apart Hotel Fethiye is in the town centre, in the Tuzla neighbourhood, where the town's weekly Tuesday market is also held. The apartments have a fully equipped kitchen and free Wi-Fi. You can view Yes1 and Yes2 (for two) and Yes3, Yes4 and Yes5 (for five) on the apartments page, and see the total price for your dates on the booking page.
